You are very charitable calling that a 20% air pocket in the “bread.”

Hey I remember inquiring about where you were sleeping during your summer walks--ie by the sides of roads? Now I’m truly concerned...what are you doing for shut eye in winter??

I once told my wife that Japanese bread is 90 percent air, she told me that was ridiculous, but I'm pretty sure if I leave one of her sandwiches in cling film all day, the bread deflates from about one centimetre thickness to about one millimetre, so it can't be far off true.

So far on this walk I've been close enough to home to not need to sleep anywhere. As I approach Okayama Prefecture, I might have to start thinking about sleeping locations. I think it will be much easier to sleep outside in a Japanese winter than a Japanese summer — less insects, bears should be hibernating, less unbearable heat and humidity. The downside is I'll need to take a bulky sleeping bag. If there's a reasonable hotel nearby though, I'll take that!

Thank you! There's so much to see, and Japan is an easy place to ramble in many ways!
